About Kibun Special Seafood Sticks 日本紀文特制蟹味棒

Kibun Special Seafood Sticks are a high-quality, gluten-free imitation crab product made primarily from surimi—a refined fish paste derived from white fish such as Threadfin Bream. With a rich seafood flavour and a soft yet satisfying texture, these sticks are fully cooked and ready to eat straight from the pack, making them a convenient and versatile ingredient for a wide range of dishes.

Despite their nickname “crab sticks,” these products typically do not contain real crab. Instead, they emulate the texture and taste of crab using seasoned fish meat, a practice that originated in Japan in the 1970s as a way to create an affordable and shelf-stable seafood alternative. The name “kani-kama” (カニカマ), short for “kani kamaboko” (crab-flavoured fish cake), reflects this cultural heritage.

Kibun Special Seafood Sticks are widely appreciated across East Asia for their convenience and delicate seafood flavour.

In Japan, they are a staple ingredient in dishes such as California rolls and kani salad, and are often served as-is with soy sauce and wasabi.

In Korean cuisine, these sticks are commonly found in gimbap (김밥), incorporated into spicy seafood stews, or pan-fried with egg for inclusion in dosirak-style lunch boxes.

In Chinese cooking, they are a popular addition to hotpot (火锅), stir-fried seafood rice, or shredded and served cold with sesame oil and vinegar as a refreshing appetiser. For a more elevated presentation, they can also be lightly seared in butter to intensify their umami flavour, or paired with yuzu mayonnaise in a contemporary Japanese-style fusion dish.
